Tropicalization of Electronic Boards – What are the advantages?

The tropicalization of electronic circuit boards is an essential practice to protect these components in demanding environments, such as maritime and offshore environments. Here are some of the main advantages of applying conformal coating (conformal coating) to electronic boards exposed to saline environments and corrosive gases:

  1. Protection against corrosion and oxidation: The insulating coating creates a physical barrier that prevents moisture, dust and chemicals from entering the boards. This significantly reduces corrosion and oxidation of materials, extending the life of electronic components.
  2. Increased durability in aggressive environments: The coating protects electronic boards from external contamination, such as dust, dirt and chemical substances. This additional protection increases the durability of printed circuit boards, tin and components in saline and corrosive gas environments, ensuring they function efficiently for longer.
  3. Reduction of failures and maintenance: With the insulating coating, the chances of short circuits, corrosion and other problems are significantly reduced. This results in fewer system failures and reduces the need for frequent maintenance.
  4. Electrical insulation: Conformal coating also provides electrical insulation, protecting tracks and components from accidental electrical discharges.
  5. Resistance to thermal variations: Some types of insulating coatings, such as silicone, are highly resistant to high temperatures and thermal variations. This is crucial in environments where weather conditions can vary greatly.
  6. Reliability and security: Adequate protection of electronic boards guarantees the reliability and security of systems in operation. This is especially important in critical applications such as navigation, communication and power generation systems.

In summary, insulating coating is an effective solution for protecting electronic boards in harsh environments, ensuring their long-term performance and preventing premature failures.

  1. Critical feature in the design of PCBs.
Despite the name given to it, it isn’t used only in PCBs to be used in tropical areas, I’ve been designing PCBs with conformal coating as a requirement for any application involving damp locations according to CSA C22.1:24, Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, Section 0, Definitions, Location.
